Dallas based singer Rosana Eckert has worked as a live performer as well as behind the scenes as an arranger, clinician, studio singer/voiceover artist, book author, and principal lecturer of vocal jazz in the prestigious Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas.

She was the first vocalist in UNT’s history to earn a master’s degree in jazz studies. The school then hired her as its first private jazz voice teacher.

Rosana’s fifth studio recording, Sailing Home, was released on June 21, 2019. Praised as “bright and imaginative,” “alluring,” and “world-class,” it was produced by singer/songwriter Peter Eldridge, who also played piano on the project.

We chat about her journey from being a French horn player to studying vocal jazz and cultivating a career in the field. We also get into her teaching philosophy and her thoughts on the value in thoroughly researching a music school before applying.

MENTIONS:

SINGING LESSONS:

  1. There is a path to everything and if you research the path, get in the path, work hard on the path and don’t get off the path, you can achieve success. That is how it works.
  2. Anyone can sing and anyone can pick it back up. There’s no expiration date on music.
  3. As you research the path you discover if it’s what you want to do.
  4. In this market versatility means work.
  5. If you can play the piano and sing you’ll have a gig anywhere in the world probably forever… that’s a huge wonderful skill.
  6. Start saying yes.
